The importance of Allotments on the health and wellbeing of Allotmenteers are well reported. But did you know how essential these spaces are to wildlife?

By providing key corridors or steppingstones to other areas of green space in an otherwise world of glass, metal and concrete. Insects, birds, hedgehogs and other wildlife are able to find enough food and shelter throughout the year.

We believe Wharncliffe Allotmenteers have an important role to play in this, encouraging wildlife to take advantage of the organic, companion planting and growing methods our members use. Year on year we have noticed the wildlife begin to thrive here. We feel this may be contributing to an increase in pollinators such as bumblebees, butterflies, good insects and invertebrates such as ground beetles that help control slug number and other plant eating insects.

Wharncliffe Allotments Wildlife Wheel

Wharncliffe Allotments has introduced several ponds, bird boxes and other natural habitats and rough-land for wild plants aimed at helping wildlife to thrive. We hope to see hedgehogs, a wider range of birds, frogs, toads and an increase in garden friendly insects including a larger variety of ladybirds on our site.
