Members of Wharnciffe Allotments have always tried to encourage wildlife on their plots. From bird boxes to rough ground, from bug hotels to pond life we can boast a range of wildlife friendly features.

Imagine then, how it felt when we came across the tiny body of a lifeless bat. None of us has seen a bat but hoped they could be making Wharncliffe Allotments a place to roost. So, it was disappointing when we came a cross a dead one.
However, and on a positive note, we can take some comfort in the fact that our site may be supporting at least one of the UK’s 18 bat species.
We’re not entirely sure of the species and would love someone to let us know what we found. We thought it could be the Common Pipistrelle?
So what should you do when you find a dead bat? Call the Bat Conservation Trust Helpline on 0345 1300 228.
the Bat Conservation Trust will send you postage-paid packaging so that you can send the dead bat to the Animal & Plant Health Agency for passive surveillance testing to check for the rabies virus.
