With the recent upturn in the weather Wharncliffe Allotments' resident honey bees have been very busy!

After a long winter of hibernation it is good to see that two of our bee colonies made it through. Wharncliffe Allotments is a bee friendly site, and thanks to the Scouse Honey Co. we have hives that produce some of the best tasting honey around. Unfortunately a third colony didn’t survive the 2016-17 winter.

Bees pollinate three-quarters of the world's most important crops. But they're under threat. More than 14% of UK bees didn’t survive the 2014-15 winter, expected loses would normal be between 5 – 10%.

It is a well-know fact that the nations gardens offer a rich diversity of plants and flowers. If all households planted bee friendly plants, they would be contributing to the survival of the British Honey Bee.

The best ways to encourage bees of all type into you garden is by providing nectar and pollen rich flowers throughout the year and encouraging them to nest in your garden.

For more information on the types of plants that pollinators thrive on, visit the Royal Horticultural Society website.
